The Venus’s-flytrap is a plant that traps and eats insects. It belongs to a group of carnivorous, or meat-eating, plants. This group also includes sundews and pitcher plants. The scientific name of the Venus’s-flytrap is Dionaea muscipula.

Despite their name, Venus flytraps don't just trap flies. They trap any insect or small animal that touches the inside of their leaves. This could be a caterpillar or spider, or even a frog! The Venus flytrap's leaves are hinged, meaning they can open and shut, much like a door.

Our preferred mixture of soil for Venus fly traps is 5 parts peat moss, 3 parts silica sand and 2 parts perlite by volume. The silica sand really helps with aeration and the formation of a very healthy root system. Silica sand is also known as white sand, silicon dioxide, silica or quartz.

For best Venus flytrap care, keep the environment humid and the soil moist but don't let the plants stand constantly in water. Grow them in a pot with drainage holes. If you have a Venus flytrap terrarium, place gravel below the soil for extra drainage. Good air circulation is also important in growing Venus flytrap.

The Venus flytrap, Dionaea muscipula, is a carnivorous plant (a plant that feeds on small animals, such as insects). Carnivorous plants grow in soil that has little nitrogen. They get nitrogen from the insects they trap. The Venus flytrap is one of a very small group of plants that can snap shut very quickly.

The Venus flytrap is a small plant whose structure can be described as a rosette of four to seven leaves, which arise from a short subterranean stem that is actually a bulb-like object. Each stem reaches a maximum size of about three to ten centimeters, depending on the time of year; (24) longer leaves with robust traps are usually formed after flowering.

The time it takes for the trap to reopen depends on the size of the insect, temperature, the age of the trap, and the number of times it has gone through this process. If you feed a Venus Flytrap something that doesn't move, e.g., a dead insect, it will not close tightly over it.

Adaptations are changes in plant development over time that give it a better chance at survival. The Venus flytrap has several interesting adaptations that are crucial to its vigour and growth. The plant lives in soils that lack nitrogen, which is a protein synthesizer.
